Most homeowners look at their backyard and see potential. But the problem is that no one knows where to start. You’re faced with a choice: patio, deck, or porch. But the problem is that you don’t understand what each of these terms means.
In this article, we’ll start with the patio and take a detailed look at what it is and why it’s an option worth considering. We’ll also address additional questions: What material should you choose? Do you need a permit? And what are the best patio ideas? Let’s break down everything you need to know about this popular backyard solution.
What Is a Patio, Exactly?
The formal patio definition is a freestanding area, level with the lawn, most often used for cooking and/or relaxing. The word patio, meaning itself, comes from the Spanish term for an inner courtyard. But today, it’s simply a hard surface for “extending life” outside the home.
Unlike a deck, a patio is built directly on the ground, without support posts. It’s most often made of poured concrete (the most budget-friendly option), natural stone, or pavers. It usually doesn’t have a roof, but many of our clients add a pergola for shade, which is an excellent solution. Functionally, it’s a full-fledged outdoor living room: level, stable, and ready for heavy furniture, a grill, and a fire pit.
The Most Common Types of Patios
There are several main types of patios, and the right choice depends on your lot’s shape, budget, and how you plan to use the space. Before starting a project, it’s worth understanding the basic options, that way, your conversation with the contractor will be much more productive.
Attached Patios
It’s attached directly to the back or side wall of the house. This is the most classic type of backyard patio, and the one we build most often. Clients love it because it feels like a natural extension of the interior space. All you have to do is step out the back door, and you’re already on the patio. It’s very convenient for summer barbecues: no need to carry plates across the lawn.
It’s perfect for small lots, as it uses the space right up against the house. It’s easy to run string lights or a permanent gas line directly from the house to the grill.
Detached Patios
Located separately from the house, this creates a standalone focal point in your yard. Do you have a large garden or a pool? Then a separate outdoor patio is an excellent choice. It can be placed in a sunny spot or under a spreading tree. Even a short walk to the patio creates a sense of a private retreat.
Our clients most often use these areas for fire pits, quiet relaxation, or pool decks. A detached patio effectively separates household noise from the relaxation area. It’s best suited for medium and large lots with plenty of space.
Wraparound and Multi-Level Patios
A wraparound patio wraps around the corners of the house and provides direct access from several rooms at once, for example, from the living room and bedroom. Plenty of space for entertaining.
A multi-level patio is the ideal solution for sloped lots. Instead of leveling the entire yard, builders create several flat tiers connected by steps. One level is for dining, and another for relaxing. We build these types of projects for challenging lots, and the result always looks high-end and unique. Both options turn an awkward terrain into an advantage.
Popular Patio Materials Homeowners Choose
The material determines both the appearance and the cost of the project. We’re often asked what people choose most often, so we’ve compiled an honest answer based on our experience:
- Cast concrete. This is the most affordable and common option. It’s durable, easy to maintain, and, if desired, can be stamped to resemble expensive natural stone, the difference will be barely noticeable.
- Paving stones. These are individual blocks made of concrete or brick. The main advantage we always highlight is that if one element cracks, you can replace just that one without having to redo the entire area.
- Natural stone. Honestly, this is the most beautiful and unique option. Slate, flagstone, and travertine give a sense of true luxury. It’s more expensive, but it looks the part.
- Brick. It’s a classic that’s a perfect fit for traditional-style homes. It instantly adds warmth and character. Your climate and budget will determine your final choice, and we’re always here to help you make that decision during the consultation phase.
Why Adding a Patio Is Worth It
If you’re wondering what a patio is used for in everyday life, the answer is simpler than it seems. During the warmer months, it’s the main gathering spot at home: morning coffee, family dinners, weekend parties.
It’s also worth mentioning the property’s value, as it can be seen as a real investment. If you ever decide to sell your property, buyers will notice a finished outdoor living area, and that affects the price. At the same time, it’s much easier to maintain than a wooden deck: no need to paint it or apply a protective coating every year.
For people who value their personal time, this is an added bonus. It might sound funny, but the larger your patio, the less you’ll have to mow your lawn. That’s a savings in time and money you probably hadn’t thought of before.
But most importantly, it’s simply a pleasant reason to go outside. Fresh air and sunshine work better than any interior redesign.
Patio vs. Other Outdoor Spaces
Many people confuse types of patios with decks and porches, so let’s set the record straight. A deck is a wooden or composite platform raised above the ground (stairs and railings are required). A porch is an extension of the house, usually with a roof, most often located by the front entrance. A patio is flush with the ground and made of solid materials, stone or concrete.
A porch welcomes guests, while a backyard patio is a private family space. A deck requires constant maintenance to prevent the wood from rotting. A patio just needs to be swept or hosed down occasionally. But the choice between them is often determined by the terrain: a flat area is ideal for a patio, but if you have a steep slope, you’ll likely need to choose a wooden deck.
